Got My Behmor! and other udates

I thought this would be a good time to give a few updates on how this year has started off. I would say, in the realm of microscopic sized companies like myself, it has started off pretty strong.

The biggest update is that I was able to purchase my Behmor roaster with out incurring any debt. That is a huge win for me. This was one of  my goals for this year. I'm also excited because this is going to allow me to roast 1 lb of green beans at a time (for comparison, 1 lb is 454g, I currently roast 100g per batch). Now I start figuring out how to use this thing.

Also, can I just point out that I got my logo in the reflection of the roaster. I'm very proud of my photography.

I have upgraded to selling 1 lb bags. This is a big cost savings. I see now why whole sale is how coffee shops make sustain their existence. I'm not sure that a Behmor is going to allow me to take on a big commercial account, but I might be able to get a little one at a mom and pop shop.

I did a quick update to my blog theme. I think it looks a lot nicer. I want to rethink my subjects so they all fit. I'm also considering changing my Beer section to a Beer and Wine. I'm not exactly a connoisseur, but I do want to serve beer and wine when grow up and have a coffee shop.

Lastly, I am starting to prepare for the purchase of my second bag of coffee. Depending on how sales go, I should be able to purchase another bag of coffee in Q3. I may have some of my Mexican left, which would leave me with 2 options. My next goal (probably for 2018) will be to offer 3 different types of coffee.

The next step will be to change my ordering process so I can sell more coffee. I'm not sure if I want to move to Roast-to-Order or just increase the number of times I roast per month. As I write this, my first thought is to figure out the Behmore and then increase my roasting to 2x/month instead of 1x/month. That way I can still plan my time accordingly. I don't want the quality of my coffee to suffer because I'm rushing.

Well, that's the update for now. Keep an eye out and look forward to the new roast profile.

2017 Goals

Sitting here trying to think of something to write about, I realize I am kind of in limbo. I haven't had a lot of new coffee experiences because of the craziness of the holidays and I don't have any grand plans for the future....wait a second...that's terrible. How can a business not have plans for the future? I need some goals.

Barista Capsule

I was cruising through my back log of Coffee News emails and spotted this article that caught my eye: The Barista Capsule. I had to know what it was. I have been working on coffee cart plans for a while but could never really figure it out. It was always to big or too heavy, or we couldn’t figure out how to power everything. I realize I was most likely making it far too complicated, but these guys looked like they figured it out.

Test Batches on the Behmor

I purchased my Behmor from Seattle Coffee Gear. It was kind of a no brainer (no this is not an endorsement). They didn't charge tax or shipping...AND they gave me a free 1 lb bag of green coffee beans. It was the best deal.
Since I didn't have to pay for those green beans, I put them to good use in testing my new roaster.
